Configured within a data update rule, a specific Characteristic can be inserted against an entity record, with the end user steering the matching value range. The counterpart action - Delete Characteristic - is also controlled in exactly the same way.
The procedure to define a characteristic action for a data update rule is as follows:
- Prerequisite procedural steps are covered separately in the topic To add an action to a data update rule. Refer to these before proceeding to step 2.
- With the Add Characteristic rule type displayed, use the Entity type drop-down field to specify the focus area for the characteristic i.e. Asset.
- Click on Add Values. The Add Characteristic Value window is displayed.
- Using the Characteristic type drop-down field, select the desired classification parameter to be ascribed to the entity as an outcome of this data update rule.
- Enter the required characteristic Value into the field provided, with applicable responses being steered by the underlying data type i.e. Date Only, Date Time, Decimal, Integer, Lookup, Text, Time Only, True or False.
- Using the Effective period type drop-down field, select the timeframe unit applicable to this characteristic i.e. Month, Quarter or Year.
- Enter the Effective period value into the field provided i.e. the Effective period type unit multiplier
1.
- Click on Add. The new entry is displayed in the Characteristics grid.
- Repeat steps 3 through 8 to add further characteristics to the data update rule.
- Click on Save. The new entry is appended to the data update rule, within the hierarchical rule structure
2.
Note
1 The resulting timeframe - calculated in months, quarters or years - determines the activation date for the replacement item, projected forward from the execution date of the data update rule.
2 The matching counterpart - Delete Characteristic - can be defined in a similar way, identifying the specific Characteristic type and Value combinations that will be removed from the entity upon executing the data update rule; the Any value tick box can be activated in circumstances where the removal process transcends all matching options.
